MANTEO, N.C. — A North Carolina district attorney said a fatal police shooting in Manteo last week was “lawful under North Carolina law.”
According to First Prosecutorial District Attorney Jeff Cruden, the incident began around 4:15 p.m. Oct. 2 in the 200 block of Mother Vineyard Road. Cruden said Denny Winslow had previously called police on Sept. 29, saying a man had broken into her apartment, assaulted her, and stolen her medication. Her report was investigated but unsubstantiated.
On Oct. 2, she called 911, reporting that the man had returned, and hung up. Multiple attempts to reconnect with her went unanswered.
