PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Officials and advocates gathered Tuesday morning in Pawtucket to encourage more people to register as organ donors.
New England Donor Services (NEDS) hosted the awareness event at Pawtucket City Hall, thanking donors and their families while highlighting the lifesaving impact of organ donation.
Among those who spoke was retired nurse Lynette Simnett, who received a liver transplant two years ago. In 2019, she was diagnosed with nonalcoholic liver disease. Doctors were able to stabilize her for a time, but by 2022, she began struggling to breathe due to fluid in her lung.
"I became septic. Miriam Hospital became part of my story," Simnett recalled. "The night I was admitted, they gave me a 20% chance of making it through the night."
