ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Fulton County jailer is in the hospital after being attacked by an inmate, the sheriff’s office said.

It happened Tuesday morning at the Fulton County Jail.

The sheriff’s office said the detention officer was “attacked and injured” with a shank.

“This incident underscores the unsafe and deteriorating conditions within the Fulton County Jail that continue to pose risks to both our team and those in our custody. Inmates are able to fashion makeshift weapons from the very materials of the aging facility, creating ongoing safety risks,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
