ATTALLA, Ala. (WIAT) -- An Alabama man allegedly murdered his son-in-law in Attalla on Tuesday morning.

According to the Attalla Police Department, officers responded around 10:12 a.m. to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Burke Avenue and Osborne Street. Police first found 64-year-old Arthur Reynolds, of Foley, who surrendered and was taken into custody.

Officers then discovered David Loyd Smothers, a 40-year-old from Attalla, dead in a nearby vehicle. A preliminary investigation showed Smothers suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Reynolds, the father-in-law of the victim, is facing a capital murder charge. Reynolds is being held in the Etowah County Detention Center without bond.

Police were investigating the motive for the shooting Tuesday evening.
