BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Bessemer City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with a controversial project that would bring a new data center to the area.

The city council voted on an ordinance that would rezone the land to "light industrial." The proposed data center has caused issues within the community, as some people said there hasn't been any transparency on the specifics of the project.

"Still to this day, I'm still thinking, out of all places, why they choose Bessemer?" said Dante Franklin, who is against the project. "This thing is bigger than Bessemer.
