WAIKIKI, Hawaii (Island News) -- The man accused of attempting to rob the First Hawaiian Bank Waikiki branch using pepper spray was indicted on Tuesday.

Police officers responded to the bank on Lewers Street on Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, where the suspect, 66-year-old Charles Christian, allegedly sprayed a substance which harmed multiple employees.

Preliminary field tests indicated that it was oleoresin capsicum, commonly known as pepper spray, and the substance caused employees to experience irritation and they received medical attention soon after.

Christian made his first court appearance on Friday, Oct. 3, and according to court documents, he demanded $150 and handed the bank teller a note that said, "I don't want to hurt you."
