PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WMBD) -- Peoria Heights had two options: overturn the mayor's veto on a 1% grocery tax, or add an advisory question on the March ballot to hear from constituents. The board voted to move forward with the tax.

"A little bit disappointed," said Mayor Matthew Wigginton. "First Mayoral veto, but I understand where my colleagues are coming from."

At a Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday night, Wigginton proposed adding an advisory question to the March primary ballot. That question being, "should the village impose a 1% grocery tax?"

This alternative was proposed, since the veto meant they missed the Oct. 1 deadline to file the tax and have it implemented by Jan. 1.
