GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WILX) - A World War II soldier from Michigan has been accounted for.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Monday that U.S. Army Technician Fifth Grade Eli T. Simantz of Grand Haven was accounted for back in May.
In late 1942, Simantz — 23 years old at the time he was killed — was assigned to Service Company, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division, and deployed in present day Papua New Guinea.
The agency says he was reportedly killed in action on Dec. 19 during an Allied campaign against fortified enemy positions in Papua New Guinea. His remains were not recovered after the war.
Simantz’s family recently received their full briefing on his identification, therefore, the agency is now allowed to share additional details on his identification.
