BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - October is breast cancer awareness month, and thanks to local volunteers, efforts to detect cancer early are not a sprint, but a mammo-thon.
Guthrie Lourdes Hospital hosted its first-ever Mammo-thon, where about 20 volunteers spent hours calling patients who are overdue for their mammograms to schedule screenings that could potentially save lives.
Manager of Radiology and Breast Care Michelle Weber says she is a breast cancer survivor herself, and that getting annual screenings to catch the cancer early is vital.
"If I had waited two years, then I wouldn't be here to talk to you about it today. So, the importance of yearly mammograms and getting breast cancer when it's early, small, and treatable, that's key for sure," said Weber.
