SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Falls Park and the area upstream are about to look different. A city project to replace a dam on the Big Sioux River is about a month away from completion.

In the upper portion of Falls Park near the Steel District, visitors can see construction in the river itself. The city used the diversion dam near the airport to reduce the flow in the Big Sioux during construction.

Tory Miedema with the Parks and Rec Department says the 100-year-old low-head dam was starting to fail in places and needed to be replaced with a new one.

"It really kind of regulates the flow, so instead of just getting a nice big pulse and then all of a sudden the falls are dry, it really regulates that flow, keeps it so we always have a consistent flow," said Miedema. "And then is also kind
