CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A person is dead after being struck by a vehicle late Wednesday night on the town highway in Clayton.

According to a news release from the Clayton Police Department, officers reported the incident around 8:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 70, also known as Clayton Boulevard, near Enterprise Drive.

Officers said witnesses told them that the pedestrian left Dunkin Donuts on Enterprise Drive and crossed the westbound lanes of Clayton Boulevard into the divided median. But when the pedestrian tried to cross the eastbound lanes, officers said a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander struck the pedestrian.

The news release said the eastbound lanes of Clayton Boulevard were closed until around 11:30 p.m.
