NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- The NYPD's highest-ranking uniformed officer has stepped down from his position this week.

NYPD Chief of Department John Chell announced his retirement in a social media post on Wednesday. The move comes a little over a week after New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the end of his reelection campaign.

Following Chell's retirement, Chief Michael LiPetri was announced as the interim Chief of Department. LiPetri is a 31-year veteran of the NYPD and served as Chief of Crime Control Strategies.

In a statement, Adams praised LiPetri's strategy to help lower gun violence in New York City while also expressing appreciation for Chell's service.
