GOUVNEREUR, New York (WWNY) - “Significant strength and troubling weaknesses.” That’s how a prison oversight group describes the state of Gouverneur Correctional Facility.
The mixed report released Thursday comes after a visit from the Correctional Association of New York, or CANY, which has been writing reports on the conditions of state prisons since 1846.
CANY says some of the findings at Gouverneur showed significant strengths, others troubling weaknesses.
CANY Executive Director Jennifer Scaife says, “We found an exceptionally high rate of satisfaction with medical care, but numerous allegations of mistreatment by security staff, which seemed to discourage individuals from filing grievances.”
