SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) — When drivers encounter potholes or damaged pavement, the first question is often who’s supposed to fix the road.

The answer lies in understanding South Carolina’s road maintenance system and knowing how to read the signs.

South Carolina has more than 60,000 miles of public roads, with the Department of Transportation maintaining about two-thirds of them.

With the fourth largest state-owned road network in the country, SCDOT is responsible for 40,000 miles of interstates, highways, and secondary routes.
