BUCKHOLTS, Texas — Buckholts Police Chief Johnny Shawn Newson has been suspended indefinitely, a decision made by the City Council.

A Bell County grand jury indicted Newsom on Sept. 24 for theft charges tied to his time at the City of Holland Police Department. Days later, Newsom turned himself in to the Milam County jail.

Now, the city council has given Newsom an indefinite suspension, with the first 30 days being paid.

Buckholts Mayor Ricky McCall declined to speak on camera, but told 6 News in a statement that the reason he and the council decided to suspend Newsom was to "Give Bell County time to make their decision. We're just giving everything time to work out and giving the court system time to do its job."
