MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Tennessee National Guard was expected to start arriving in Shelby County Wednesday night and be operational by Friday. That’s according to State Representative Torrey Harris.

Rep. Harris and other state and local leaders Wednesday also provided more clarity on the troops' role in the Memphis Safe Task Force. In a letter Rep. Harris posted to social media he said, "the National Guard will serve in supportive, non-enforcement roles such as community safety patrols, traffic control, and site security, assisting local law-enforcement, but not replacing them."

In an NAACP virtual town hall meeting Wednesday, Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis echoed Harris‘s announcement.
