Hamilton streetscapes are ever-changing.
Businesses come and go. Roads transform from two-way to one-way, and back again. Rooflines creep closer to the clouds.
And memories of what the city once looked like begin to fade.
As a reminder of how much things have changed, The Spectator has recreated archival photos of Hamilton streetscapes.
Pictured here is John Street South at the base of the Mountain access at Arkledun Avenue, which becomes the Jolley Cut when headed south.
The compared view is just east of St Joseph’s Hospital, as it appeared on April 4, 1956, and on July 30, 2025. There were no traffic lights at the intersection at that time.
