PENDLETON, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Tri-County Technical College said a student was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center following an incident on campus.

Officials said during a welding class on Thursday evening, a student experienced a “brief fireball incident while lighting a cutting torch”. The gas has been running too long prior to ignition, resulting in a flash.

“This type of occurrence, while startling, can happen in welding environments when fuel gas accumulates before ignition,” officials said.

According to the school, student was wearing appropriate protective welding equipment but out of an abundance of caution due to potential inhalation concerns, the student was taken to the Augusta Burn Center for evaluation.
