PORTLAND, Ore. — Seniors are now the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population in Oregon — and across the country — as aging baby boomers face rising housing costs, limited incomes and increasing health needs.

In response, a specialized team called the Homeless Mobile Intake Team (HMIT) is helping vulnerable elders transition from the streets into safe, stable housing and, in many cases, long-term care. The HMIT is part of Multnomah County's Aging, Disability and Veterans Services Division.

One of those seniors is 67-year-old Stephanie Giorgi, who found herself homeless not long ago after addiction and strained family relationships left her without a place to stay.
