When asked, Reese Irwin said her favourite heritage apple were little mysteries.

Literally.

"It's from a really large tree that's just by the trailhead," Irwin explained. "We don't know what kind of apples they are. They're very tiny, but they're very tasty."

Irwin was one of the volunteers serving up heritage apples at Derby Reach Parks Day in Langley, the annual environmental celebration of almost-forgotten apples.

"These apples are all heritage varieties," said Irwin, while slicing samples to serve to visitors..

"They would have been planted at Derby in the 1830s, 40s, 50s or so. They're all from along the Port to Port Trail. We took some cuttings from those heritage trees and we grafted them onto the orchard that's just over there at the Derby Reach Heritage Park area and those tr
