PHOENIX — A man who was shooting a gun while driving through downtown Phoenix was shot by police officers, according to officials with the city's police department.

Police originally were responding to a stolen vehicle, Sergeant Brian Bower told 12News. When officers tried to stop the person allegedly involved in stealing a vehicle, the man fled from police.

The man started shooting near 7th Avenue and Osborn Road, according to police. The man continued shooting while driving downtown in the Roosevelt Row area, according to police. Police said it is unclear what the man was shooting at.

The man was shot by police near 16th Street and I-10. He was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. When police gave an update just after 9 p.m. on Friday, the man was still
