KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An officer is home and recovering after a possibly impaired driver hit the back of their patrol car early Saturday, the Kansas City Police Department says.

The crash happened just after midnight on Oct. 11.

According to KCPD, an officer was pulled over on the left-hand shoulder of Interstate 29 at Waukomis Drive to help with a DUI traffic stop. As the officer sat in their parked patrol car with the emergency lights on, a blue Kia Forte speeding north drove into the back of it.

The Kia’s driver and the officer were both seriously injured. KCPD said the officer was released from the hospital and is continuing to recover, but the Kia driver remains in serious condition.

The officer’s identity was not shared.
