A segment of the Great Allegheny Passage between the Somerset County communities of Rockwood and Markleton has reopened after being closed by landslides in June.
Contractors hired by Somerset County completed the excavation of about 300 feet of steep and unstable hillside on Thursday, removing fallen trees and rocks, clearing clogged culverts, and resurfacing several hundred feet of damaged trail surface, according to the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy, which arranged and subsidized the work.
During the closure, bicyclists used shuttle services to get around the closed portion of the trail, which runs 150 miles between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Md.
Crews will continue to remove gates and signs and perform additional trail-smoothing work next week.
