BATON ROUGE, La. — Shane Beamer himself said it didn’t mean anything. Said it all the way back at SEC Media Days, when the projections of South Carolina being a sexy pick for the College Football Playoff were peaking.

They were only saying that, he said, because USC won nine games last year and returned its quarterback. But that said, he fully believed the Gamecocks had the team to live up to those outside lofty projections.

Halfway through the season after a 20-10 loss at No. 11 LSU on Oct. 11, they’re just hoping to make a bowl game. With four straight Top 25 opponents next on the schedule, the year is shaping to be what the LSU game was — missed opportunity.
