AGAWAM — With less than a month to go before Veterans Day, work is on pace for a new courtyard honoring Agawam residents who served in the military.

The Nov. 11 holiday will be the first public event at Veterans Memorial Plaza in School Street Park. The roughly 2,000-square foot paved courtyard will replace Veterans Green, the current site of Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, at the corner of Main and School streets.

“It’s beautiful. It’s going to really make the ceremonies nicer,” City Councilor Anthony Russo said in August, before the council’s unanimous vote to spend $213,760 on the project. “It’s going to be a real staple part of School Street Park.”
