Two groups have launched Federal Court challenges over Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt's decision to extend the life of Woodside's North West Shelf gas project.

Environmental organisation the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), and activist group Friends of Australian Rock Art (FARA) announced their separate legal challenges this morning.

Mr Watt conditionally approved the extension of the North West Shelf project to 2070 in May, subject to "strict conditions".

The minister gave final approval in September after months of negotiation with Woodside, with " watered down" conditions.
