Beneath the drizzling sky Monday morning, children and adults alike skipped to the center of the Santa Fe Indian School's plaza, standing in two lines facing each other.

Then, the music started — and, as hundreds of attendees looked on, everyone began to dance.

The display, where community members were invited to join an Indigenous dance group for a song, was just one showcase at the school’s annual, open-to-the-public Feast Day Monday, also Indigenous Peoples' Day. Dances by different groups continued throughout the day, punctuated by a handful of races for various age ranges where children ran through the gravel to grab at prizes.

The festivities also occurred beyond the school’s plaza: Dozens of booths offering Indigenous food, drinks, jewelry and other art for sale stood in the park
