ST. LOUIS — The motorist who hit and critically injured a scooter driver earlier this month was an off-duty St. Louis police officer, the department confirmed Tuesday.

Mitch McCoy, a police spokesman, said the officer collided with the scooter at Morgan Ford Road and Carondelet Boulevard on Oct. 1, in the city's Boulevard Heights neighborhood.

The off-duty officer was driving a Ford F-150 pickup, not a department vehicle, McCoy said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the pickup was heading south on Morgan Ford and had a green light, police said. The pickup turned left as the scooter was heading north on Morgan Ford across Carondelet, police said. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

The preliminary report didn't say if the officer had a green arrow before turning left.
