Canon Davis Memorial Church in Sarnia will close at the end of October — a year shy of its centennial.

The Anglican parish at the corner of Russell Street North and Maxwell Street will hold its final regular Sunday service Oct. 26, 10 a.m., with a deconsecrating service with Right Rev. Todd Townsend, Bishop of the Diocese of Huron, set for Dec. 2, 7 p.m.

“Declining numbers” is part of the reason for the decision to close, said Rev. Karen Nelles, administrator and priest in charge of the parish that turned 99 this year.

“We would have, I would say, about 25 people attending on a Sunday morning,” she said.

“To maintain a large building like that requires financial resources and, with declining attendance, that’s just not sustainable.”
