WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — A windsurfer was rescued Monday afternoon after struggling against harsh weather brought on by the nor'easter near Sandy Point Island.

The Watch Hill Fire Department, along with Stonington and Pawcatuck fire crews, responded around 1:35 p.m. after a concerned resident called 911.

Officials found the windsurfer just off the folly near the island's northern tip. He had reportedly been battling strong winds and waves for more than an hour and was unable to reach his board or make it back to shore.

Crews said he was safely brought aboard the Watch Hill Fire Department’s boat and taken to shore for evaluation, then transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The U.S. Coast Guard was also notified.
