DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- State transportation officials are urging drivers to be cautious on the roads as deer become more active during mating season.

"This is the time of year when we typically see the most crashes involving deer," Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said. "As the hours of daylight become shorter and more deer are crossing the highways, drivers should be especially cautious and scan the road ahead to prevent dangerous crashes."

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, there were more than 17,000 crashes involving deer in the state last year. More than one-third of those crashes happened in October and November.

The counties with the most deer crashes last year were:

Waukesha 937

Washington 798

St. Croix 791

Dane 770

Sheboygan 763
