TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The Tucson Unified School District is asking voters to approve a new budget override that would provide $45 million annually to boost teacher salaries and expand educational programs.

It’s the first override the district has asked for in more than 25 years.

Proposition 414 , which appears on ballots now, aims to address teacher retention issues by increasing compensation in a district where educators earn significantly less than the state average.

TUSD teachers currently make an average of $56,000 per year , which is $6,000 below the state average, according to data collected by the National Education Association . Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo said this pay gap puts the district at a disadvantage.
