Scottish prisons have scaled back their attempts to implement "painfree" restraint techniques due to an overcrowding crisis.

The move comes after the death of an HMP Edinburgh prisoner, Alan Marshall back in 2015.

Allan, 30, from South Lanarkshire, was found to have died behind bars after excessive force was used by several officers at the Saughton prison.

He was on remand at HMP Edinburgh when he was restrained face down by 17 prison officers and died four days later, the Daily Record reports.

SPS began piloting new "non-pain-inducing" control and restraints in three jails for women, young people and adult males last year.
