A longtime St. Thomas politician is stepping down in his 30th year of holding elected office.
St. Thomas Coun. Steve Peters announced at Tuesday’s council meeting that he was resigning as city councillor, his second stint in the role.

In an interview with The Free Press earlier in the day, Peters, 62, said he’d been contemplating leaving council since the summer to focus on his position as chair of the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers, to which he was appointed last year.
“This is not a decision that I made overnight,” Peters said. “I’m a person who is very focused, and over the past year, in my role as chair of the greenhouse vegetable growers, I realized that my focus was not fully on (the organization) and not fully on city council.
