BARABOO, Wis. (WKOW) – The rock climbing community is mourning the loss of a legend. On October 6, 84-year-old Pete Cleveland died after a fall while climbing at Devil’s Lake State Park.

A tribute of flowers now marks the base of what friends call 'Pete's Tree.'

This spot on the north slope of Devil's Lake State Park was one of Cleveland's favorite climbing locations and the place where he died. On Sunday, family and friends gathered there to honor his life and legacy.

"I think the biggest thing that I got away from that is like, wow, look all the people he impacted," said Li-En Tai, a close friend of Cleveland's and the director of the Chicago Mountaineering Club.
