Chris Bowen’s renewables agenda has been dealt another blow after it was revealed the government’s $1 billion Solar SunShot Program had only handed out two contracts to Australian producers - despite being unveiled more than a year ago.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the Solar Sunshot Program in March 2024, saying the $1 billion initiative would “supercharge” Australia’s ambition to become a “renewable energy superpower at home and abroad."

The scheme was established to kickstart domestic solar panel manufacturing, build sovereign capabilities in critical energy supply chains and create jobs in the clean energy sector.
