HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A state contractor removed the historic Falls of Clyde from Honolulu Harbor before dawn Wednesday morning.
Tugboats pulled the 146-year-old ship to a location 25 miles south of Oahu, where the vessel was then sunk.
The ship was built in 1878 in Scotland, and was said to be the last four-masted, iron-hulled sailing ship in the world.
The group Friends of Falls of Clyde fought for years to save it, but the repairs were too costly, and the state said the vessel became a safety hazard.
The group held a farewell ceremony Tuesday.
“I just want her to be remembered as a ship that worked all around the world, did many great things for many years, was a great representative,” said Don Froning, Friends of Falls of Clyde board member.
