Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the onset of the Northeast Monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, effective today. This key weather system, which brings the bulk of rainfall to the region from October to December, has commenced alongside the complete withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the Indian subcontinent.
The IMD has issued a stern warning of very heavy rainfall, measuring between 12 cm to 20 cm, across Tamil Nadu on October 16 and 17. Furthermore, a prolonged spell of moderate rainfall is forecast for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next seven days, signalling a vigorous start to the primary rainy season.
