An independent investigation of the Haverhill Police Department, which has faced intense scrutiny since a man died while being restrained by officers in July, and a major leadership shakeup last week, is slated to begin Thursday, the city said.
Haverhill Mayor Melinda Barrett said in a statement Wednesday she has hired attorney Regina M. Ryan of the firm Discrimination and Harassment Solutions to “conduct a targeted review” of the police department after officers and staff raised concerns last week about its operations, policies, and practices.
“Our goal with this independent investigation is to ensure that the police force can conduct their jobs in an environment that protects both them and the public,” Barrett said.
