AUSTIN, Texas — A large number of students at an East Austin middle school either missed school or were sent home early on Thursday because of stomach illness.

In a letter sent to parents on Thursday, Kealing Middle School principal Timothy Estes stated that roughly 100 students came down with a gastrointestinal stomach issue. The letter states that the majority of students who got sick participated in an orchestra concert on Wednesday night.

The source of what caused the illness has not yet been confirmed.

Estes said school officials immediately contacted the Austin ISD Health Department, which is now working closely with local health officials to follow protocols regarding tracking the source of the illness and subsequent sanitation.
