ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Olmsted County Public Health Services has confirmed a measles case in an unvaccinated child under five years old. The child, who recently traveled internationally, is showing symptoms of the highly contagious illness.
Measles can lead to severe health complications and spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or simply being in the same room as an infected person. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected individual leaves.
Health officials are reaching out to those potentially exposed and stress that unvaccinated individuals are at higher risk. Early measles symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, followed by a rash spreading from the head to the rest of the body.
