KANSAS CITY, Mo. ( KMBC ) -- The Kansas City Council on Thursday approved plans to build a $22 million temporary jail, marking the city’s first locally operated detention facility since 2009.

City officials said the modular facility will help handle public safety needs during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and reduce dependence on out-of-county jails.
