PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) confirmed on Friday that it has used undercover officers during some public demonstrations, saying the tactic helps prevent violence and allows for targeted arrests without escalating tensions.

In a statement responding to an article first reported by The Oregonian on the issue, a PPB spokesperson said the use of so-called Confidential Reliable Sources, which can include plainclothes Portland police officers, is not new and has been employed for years to identify people committing crimes during protests.
