TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) - The Tough Kookie Cancer Walk and Run raises funds to combat disease on Texas A&M University-Texarkana.

“I’m walking because I’m a survivor and I’m walking for my friend Kim,” says Ellie Thornberry, participant of the cancer walk.

The weather cooperated this morning for the annual “Tough Kookie” Cancer run and walk. Organizers say around 2000 people participated in the event held on the campus of Texas A&M University-Texarkana. The Tough Kookie walk and run began five years ago, started by Katina Levingston, who is a cancer survivor.

Levingston said over the years, the event has raised $700,000 to fight cancer in the area. Levingston said their mission is to raise money, not for the cure of cancer, but to help with the disease and the cost of treatment.
