A woman who beat cervical cancer has revealed she faced a secondary battle after becoming addicted to painkillers. Stevie Davis, 36, received a cervical cancer diagnosis in 2014, which resulted in the removal of both her cervix and lymph nodes.

When the disease returned a second time, Stevie required a hysterectomy and had her womb and ovaries taken out as well. It was after this second round of surgery that she was prescribed the opioid co-codamol.

While co-codamol effectively relieves pain in the short term, it can sometimes cause dependence when used long-term, reports the Mirror .

It was this dependence that Stevie tragically developed as she continued taking it beyond the prescribed period.
