UNITY, Maine — The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association held its annual Great Maine Apple Day in Unity to help people learn about the hundreds of apple varieties grown in the state.

"I think we just need to pay the respects to fruit that has been here and keep them in production and keep them around," C.J. Walke, the orchard program manager for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, said.

Maine’s apple heritage dates to the early 1600s. It’s a lasting tradition as many look forward to apple harvesting every year.

"We're trying to promote these; shows folks they're hardy in Maine, they produce in Maine, they have been growing and producing fruit here for centuries, and just try to revive them and get them back in circulation,” Walke said.
