LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Michigan State Police posts across the state are preparing to participate in National Drug Take Back Day next Saturday, offering residents a free opportunity to safely dispose of prescription drugs.

The initiative aims to keep drugs out of the hands of children, pets, and anyone at risk of addiction. Last year, police posts across Michigan collected more than 1,000 pounds of unused prescription drugs.

Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez of the Michigan State Police said the misuse of prescription medications is a growing concern.

“We do know that it’s increasing,” said Gonzalez. “The misuse of these prescription medications, along with illegal drugs, is increasing because people find it easy to gain access to.”
