A professor at Vancouver Island University is part of a research project building custom machinery and tools to find out why some cancerous tumours resist immunotherapies, so that doctors are able to more effectively treat the disease.
Chemistry professor Kyle Duncan's team at VIU is responsible for analyzing the tumours, developing a molecular map to understand the cancer's metabolism then feeding the data back to the teams responsible for introducing the immunotherapies.
The project started in 2023 and is funded through Terry Fox Research Institute grants, among other funding sources, including most recently the Michael Smith Health Research B.C.'s scholar program.
"Immunotherapies are a promising treatment, but solid tumours are sometimes resistant to immunotherapies," Duncan explain
