LINCOLN COUNTY Ore. (KPTV) - A person is dead after being trapped in an ocean current near Siletz Bay in Lincoln County on Sunday afternoon, according to North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District #1.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., callers reported to 911 that a person was trapped in a strong current and being pulled out to sea.

Two jet skis and a drone were launched to begin the search. The U.S. Coast Guard also sent two lifeboats and a helicopter.

Shortly after, the person was found but they had already died. Their name has not been released at this time.

Fire officials expressed condolences for the family and loved ones of the person who died, and urged people to remember that sneaker waves can strike without warning, knock people off their feet, and drag them into deep, cold water.
