A strange new “performance art” trend has taken hold in Sydney, with groups of young people zip-tying themselves to trains, taping their bodies to street lights and covering each other in paint as bemused commuters look on.

Crowds have been gathering near Town Hall in recent weeks to watch the chaotic scenes unfold with young men bound to posts, splattered with colour, and at times even pelted with tomatoes.

Others have been seen strapped into chairs beside the light rail tracks, as passers-by record the spectacle on their phones.

The stunts have drawn huge attention online, with videos of the acts spreading rapidly across Facebook and Instagram.
